SUBARU LEGACY GROUP A
1992
In 1989, Mr Kuze, president of Subaru Tecnica International, visited Prodrive in Banbury, on his way back to Japan from the Safari Rally. He wanted to know if Prodrive could turn the Subaru Legacy into a competitive rally car - the rest, as they say, is history.

The Legacy RS was built to group A regulations. As per the road car on which it was based, it features a flat four (boxer) engine longitudinally mounted to give a fully symmetrical four wheel drive system.

The car made its debut at the 1990 Acropolis Rally driven by Ian Duncan and Markku Alen. In the early stages Alen led the event from a top class field, but the rough conditions were to take its toll on the car and he would retire.

26 of the Legacy RS Group A cars were built from 1990 to 1993, with the car winning the British Rally Championship for Colin McRae in 1991 and 1992, and for Richard Burns in 1993. However, it wasn't it until its final event at Rally New Zealand that it finally secured its, Subaru's and Colin McRae's debut World Rally Championship victory. The car was subsequently superseded by the Impreza.
